Have you ever heard the expression "curiosity killed the cat?" The expression was said due to the fact that cats, the curious creatures that they were, would find themselves in places that could possibly kill them just due to their uncontrollable curiosity. I believe that the same thing is even true for this generation of people with technology.
It all started when I was telling a story to my dad. Now I love to talk to my dad now that I am older, because I know if no one else in the world cares about my story, my dad is there. Anyway, I began to tell my story when half way through, I noticed my dad's phone getting a text. As I continued I noticed him smile and it wasn't towards my story, causing it didn't render a smile, but rather the words that crossed his iPhone. I love my dad and I know that he generally cared about what I had to say, but I have seen these so many times with friends and have even caught myself doing the same thing.
You know I am all game for technology, and those who know me know that I am a sucker for the newest and late-breaking technology. But these occurrences got me thinking about what technology is doing to our culture. We are getting so connected to each other electronically, that we are getting more and more disconnected personally. We get so distracted in the moments we have to connect to the people most important to us. I wonder what would happen if we all decided to ignore that next text for one more minute and give that one person the time of day. What kind of impact would we have? What kind of connections could we make? Do you think it would really matter? I think we would be amazed at the impact you can have on a person just by listening.
